Credit for Sports

Advanced Sports Credit
Athletic Advanced Education (APE) is offered by the Oakland Unified School District to students who wish to earn ten Physical Education credits on their high school transcript for their participation on their high school athletics/sports teams. In order to earn the credits through APE, students must complete the request form, including signatures by student-athlete, parent/guardian, Assistant Principal and Counselor. The request form must be turned into the student-athlete’s high school Athletic Director the last week of the league season in which the student participated. Upon verification from the Athletic Director that the student-athlete regularly attended practices and contests and completed the season in good standing, they will receive 10 credits of PE on her/his high school transcript. The completed, signed form must be turned into the student-athlete’s high school Athletic Director the last week of the league season for which the student is wanting to earn PE credit.
Guidelines to Receive Credit:

Students must have a passed 9th grade PE in order to receive Advanced Credit in the 10th, 11th and 12th grade

All 9th grade students must take PE at Oakland Tech

Students who do not pass 9th grade PE will need to take PE in the 10th grade

Students who take dance will not be eligible to receive Advanced Sports credit until student has taken PE

Students may earn Advanced Credit for participating in an approved Oakland Athletic League (OAL) sport during the school year

Students who are in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade can receive Advanced Credit. No 9th graders can receive the credit, during the year or retroactively.

Students must have 400 minutes completed within 10 days.

Example: 3 times a week (2 hours)= 360 minutes

Students must attend practice regularly

Student must be eligible to participate the entire season

Student must maintain a 2.0 GPA

Each sport/season that a student participates in counts as Advanced Sports participation for one semester — i.e., played football in the fall and baseball in the Spring = 1 year of Advanced Sports credit

Students must play 2 approved CIF sports in a year to receive Advanced Sports Credit

Students must play at least two seasons as 10th graders otherwise they will be placed in PE during their 11th or 12th grade year for the entire year as we do not have the capacity to make major shifts to students schedules at the first semester break.

As a 9th grader, students must have passed and participated in 5 standards of the Physical Fitness Test (PFT).
The Following Requirements Remain in Place:

OUSD high schools will continue to offer physical education courses that include each of the required eight content areas that students are required to receive instruction in, and evaluation of their progress in (Title 5 California Code of Regulations §§ 10060[a], 10060[g]).

All students in grade 9, must take the California Physical Fitness Test (Education Code Section 60800).

Advanced Sports PE is available to students in the 10th grade and above who satisfy all of the prerequisites listed below:

Tenth grade students enrolled in Sports PE are expected to participate in two school-based CIF approved competitive sports during their sophomore year in order to receive 10 units of credit towards their Physical Education graduation requirement.

Advanced Sports PE students must maintain eligibility—earning a 2.0 GPA.

Advanced Sports PE candidates must have participated on at least two competitive school-based CIF approved sports teams during their freshman year.

Students must have earned a ‘C’ or higher in their 9th Grade Physical Education class.

As a 9th grader, students must have passed/participated in 5 standards of the Physical Fitness Test (PFT).

Participate in at least 70% of team practices and competitions.

Remain academically eligible each day of the season.

Complete the entire season as a member of the team.

The Athletic Director or AP of Athletics will determine if a student is no longer eligible to be a member of the team and therefore would need to be enrolled in a Physical Education course)

Complete and turn in the Application for OAL Advanced Sports PE Credit no later than May 8, 2026.
